The object of making a one-piece drum is that such a shell can resonate as one body, without the potential interference of glue seams, plies or mixed materials.
Chris cuts a large slice out of a tree trunk and then uses a chain saw, a chisel and a sander to delicately shape the timber into a hollowed, cylindrical shape. The shell is then “cured” in strict climate-controlled conditions for anywhere up to 12 months: a process designed to carefully reduce the moisture content of the shell. The cured shell is incrementally lathed down to the ideal diameter and thickness, then drilled for fittings, sealed and polished.
