Because I was never motivated by commercial considerations I took no notice of how other people made or sold drums. We must be one of the few companies in the world that sells many of its prototypes to the best players in their field.

The challenge is to get it right first time. Over the years it gets a little easier to predict a sound but there's always a surprise. We have about 600 different types of wood here in Western Australia so there's plenty of scope. One thing you can be pretty sure of; if you travel about 200 miles from here (Perth) and make a drum from a timber growing there it will be a world first.

Our ply finishes now appear on most companies' top of the line range so we've got better ones now. It won't be long before other companies delve into Jarrah shells also."
