With almost two decades of drumming experience under my belt at that time, I felt that the instrument can be better, will be better, must be better for future generations. I had studied Australian timbers and their different environments in great detail. So I set forth to create the world’s first solid wood snare drum. A drum with no joins, no seams, no glue – just a hollowed tree trunk with an incredible sound. I believed it was possible and about 18 months later, I held my first solid wood snare drum in my hands. That was back in 1980.

As I reflect upon all we have accomplished since then, I am equally proud and humbled. I am grateful that I took no notice of how other companies made or sold drums. To this day, we don’t use large machinery or computerized technology. All of our drums are 100% handcrafted, using simple wood tools and small machines - which means each instrument leaves our workshop with its own personality.

We are fortunate to have access to such rare and exceptional materials. Though it involves tremendous effort to obtain them – sometimes travelling to the country’s most remote areas – it would be a disservice not to show them to the world at their full potential. I can’t resist. I’m drawn to the challenge of working with some of the world’s most difficult timbers to create world-class instruments of the highest calibre. Because with every new creation is a new discovery – something unique, innovative, original.

I’m passionate about providing drummers with extraordinary and uncommon sounds. And I’m motivated to continually explore and create, because - at the heart of the matter - I’m just an enthusiastic drummer keen to hear the end results.

Now, as we near our 30-year anniversary, I’m proud to be introducing a range of new drums to the industry. These designs are derived from my timber research days and they possess the unique qualities that will make them the benchmark of future sounds.
